Literacy programs

 

Eligibility:  Dollar General grant programs are available to qualifying non-profit organizations in 43 states where Dollar General is located.

 

Available Funding: Multiple awards up to $15,000 each 

 

Deadline: February 25, 2016 (adult, family and summer reading grants); May 19, 2016 (youth).

 

Description: The following four grant programs help improve the lives of people of all ages in communities with a Dollar General Store: 

 

  • Adult Literacy Grants:  These funds go to provide direct service to adults in need of literacy assistance. Applicants must provide one of the following: adult basic education; GED preparation; and English language acquisition.

 

  • Family Literacy Grants:  Applicants must focus literacy services on entire families and must have the following four components: (1) adult education instruction; (2) children's education; (3) parent and child together time or PACT; and (4) parenting classes.

 

  • Summer Reading Grants:  Applicants use these funds to start or expand a summer reading program, which target pre-K-12 students who are new readers, below grade level readers or readers with learning disabilities.

 

  • Youth Literacy Grants:  These grants help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading.

 

Grant funding may be used for the following: implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs; purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives; and purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs.
